Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar and Patents:
He was instrumental in granting, saving, protecting patents for diverse Indian herbs, grains. A US-based team received a patent in 1995 for the “use of turmeric for wound healing.” The University of Mississippi Medical Center received this patent. The CSIR’s Dr. Mashelkar and his team were intrigued with the patent. In addition, the CSIR engaged in an extended lawsuit to have the patent revoked and submitted a request for examination to the USPTO. Furthermore, the CSIR conducted significant study and discovered 32 references to the use of turmeric for wound healing in several languages (most notably Sanskrit and Hindi). The case was ultimately resolved in favor of the CSIR in 1998, nevertheless. The CSIR was successful in proving that using turmeric to treat wounds was an ancient practice.
